Tesco Farming

The Tesco Egg Range

All of our fresh eggs are from carefully selected farm-assured British farms. The farms are independently audited to make sure our livestock standards are followed.

There are 4 key types of egg available at Tesco:

Value caged eggs
Willow Farm eggs
Free-range eggs
Organic eggs

Tesco Value Eggs

Tesco Value EggsThese come from chickens that are reared in both traditional and ‘enriched’ cages. After 2010 the traditional cage will be phased out and will be replaced with ‘enriched’ cage units; these give the birds a perch and nesting area, as well as slightly more head space. The farmers who manage our hens have had experience in agriculture and ensure the birds are provided with good quality feed and water. All of the farms are independently annually audited by the Lion scheme to ensure compliance with the standards. Recently we have introduced even clearer labelling on to our packs to allow our customers to make an informed choice.

Tesco Willow Farm Eggs

Willow Farm EggsThe chickens that lay our Tesco Willow Farm eggs live in barns, which are audited and approved by the RSPCA Freedom Foods scheme. Hens are free to roam the barns in comfortable deep litter refreshed daily by our farmers; the barns have an enriched environment for our laying hens so they can dust bathe, perch and lay eggs in nest boxes.

They are also fed a corn enriched diet which improves the colour and flavour of the yolk.

Tesco Free Range Eggs

Free Range EggsOur Free-range hens are free to roam from dawn to dusk on pasture and have shelter when they want it. Our farmers use breeds specially selected for good ranging and hardiness. They have free access to food and fresh water when they need it; their feed is a balanced diet providing all of the nutrients needed for good health. All of our Free-range farms are Freedom Food (RSPCA) approved and meet all their standards. We are working with our suppliers to further improve the range area given to these chickens.

Tesco Organic Eggs

Tesco Organic EggsAll of our Tesco Organic eggs farms are managed according to the standards laid down by one of the organic standards, such as Organic Farmers & Growers. During the daylight hours the hens are free to roam outside on organic pasture; naturally chickens can be anxious with open spaces, this is why our organic pasture has covers in the form of trees, bushes and other shaded areas. Outside they can scratch around and enjoy the space and fresh air. Hens can dust bathe, perch and lay eggs in nest boxes where the eggs are collected daily by our farmers. All of the feed is organic certified with the majority being organic cereals.
