Tesco Farming

Livestock Standards

We know how important animal welfare is to our customers and that’s why we have a dedicated agriculture team at Tesco, who are responsible for writing and implementing our strict Livestock codes of Practice.  These codes cover all aspects of farming from the breeding farms to the finishing farms, and ensure good environmental practice as well as welfare and food safety.

We also work with independent experts, such as vets, to ensure we keep improving things.  And to make sure our suppliers always follow these codes, we have an independent auditing company carry out over 1000 unannounced checks on our farms each year.  These standards are applied wherever we source from, regardless of country of origin

Our agriculture team also spend time working with the farmers that supply us to improve standards and co-operation in the supply chain, as well as develop new products and systems.

At Tesco, we want to give our customers the choice on what standards of welfare they buy.  We have always answered direct customer queries on what our standards include and mean for animals, but now we want to make more information available.

This section of our website outlines the principals of our different ranges for each of the key species, and then gives detailed technical information for those customers who want to learn more about our standards.

In addition, we never compromise welfare in our value ranges; this range offers great value for money, but it is not achieved by cutting standards on our farms.  Generally the products have slightly more fat, an irregular or uneven shape or slice thickness.

If there are still areas where you would like more information please use the feedback form and we will happily provide more details or clarification.

Welcome
