Local Choice Dairy Farmers
Brothers Richard and Tom Cornock work together on their family dairy farm in Tytherington near Thornbury in the West Country. Their family first moved to New House Farm in the 1840’s and have always had a desire to market and sell their milk locally. In the summer of 2007 the Cornock’s were given the opportunity to join the Tesco Local Choice scheme through Dairy Farmers of Britain. The brothers now supply Tesco with Local Choice milk on a daily basis.
Richard said New House Farm was an ideal candidate to supply local milk to Tesco, “We run it as a low input farm with a high priority given to welfare and wildlife – we are currently in two agri-environment schemes, and that gives us just the right profile to sell high quality milk,” he said.
“Ideally, we would love to sell the milk via farmers’ markets but the practicality of bottling our own makes this impossible, so Local Choice is the next best thing. In this day and age, when people are concerned about food miles and carbon footprints, consumers are looking to source more and more food from where they live, and this is the ideal arrangement: it means they can buy local produce, and it gives us the extra margin we need to build a sustainable business.”
