Tesco New Season Lamb Producer Michael Ware
Michael farms alongside his family at Burn Farm producing top quality spring lamb for the Tesco Finest Devon and Cornwall lamb range.
Michael produces well-bred lambs fed on more than 300 acres of grass land. When the weather is cold the lambs are housed indoors in straw bedded barns. “We’ve had wet weather this year – and we’ve kept the lambs in barns for about 10 days to get them strong. When you get them outside they soon get used to it”.
Barn Farm is situated in mild East Devon, where they tend to have regular rainfall which produces rich grass for the lambs and enjoys temperatures two to three degrees higher than the rest of the country. “Most lambs are born in March and April, but the clement weather here means that ours are born as early as January, making Burn Farm new season lamb available as early as March”.
Rearing high quality new season lamb is hard work, “The lambing season is incredibly busy. You’re talking late nights and early starts seven days a week. But it is satisfying producing fit and healthy lambs – and happy ewes. That’s when you know you have done everything right.”
